He bought a used model as a teenager, but because he couldn't pay someone else to restore it, he learned how to do the work himself. After a stint in the Army, Short decided to make his passion for classic cars his life's work, and FantomWorks was born. Today the Norfolk, Va., company is the largest auto restoration shop in the U.S., and this reality series shows how Short and his team meticulously refurbish some of America's favorite rides. Drama ensues in the form of personality clashes, cost overruns, irate customers and other issues, which are compounded by Short's reputation as a straight shooter who won't accept substandard results.

Sean asks Dan to find a 1969 Camaro that can be built into the custom resto-mod of his dreams; Jeff wants to give his 1969 Cutlass a rare Hurst makeover, but the engine has never run and there are more parts in boxes than on the car.
Tom asks Dan to find him a rare '67 Camaro convertible with factory AC; Dave wants Dan to build a safe and almost-all-stock '71 Datsun, but the car is badly damaged from previous restoration work.

The crew finishes the build of the ultimate Mustang Sleeper for Antonio and Andres - a California Special powered by a Coyote Aluminator; Phil wants a '49 Chevy pick-up like the one he rode in as a child, but the truck is a disassembled puzzle.
David is a Volkswagen fanatic who wants a 1967 Beetle that can outmatch muscle cars; Robert wants a widened 1967 Corvette supercar, but first FantomWorks have to undo the bad repairs from at least three fiberglass fender accidents.
Chris asks FantomWorks to breathe new life into a 1951 Mercury Woody that was sitting in a chicken coop for thirty years; Dan's 1970 Mustang Boss arrives with a long list of problems and the speed of a sea slug.
Jay brings Dan a 2012 Camaro ZL1 with poor performance and a blown supercharger; Terry wants Dan to complete a high-powered restomod of a 1931 Landau Phaeton, but the car arrives with mismatched parts and a junkyard engine.
